Community Fish Cheat Sheet

Woohoo! You have a new freshwater aquarium for tropical fish! It’s filled with water and the filter has been running for at least 3 days. But a fish tank is only a fish tank without the love of good fishies to make it a “home”!

The easiest way, especially for beginners, to build a community in your aquarium is to start out with what are referred to as “community fish”. These types are also known as “bread and butter” species. These are tropical fish that are not too aggressive and get along well with each other. They are also beautiful and more affordable than other types.

Here are some popular community fish with a few pictures to help you identify them. I’ve listed them in alphabetical order.
